Bella Ramsey – who identifies as non-binary and uses all pronouns – is totally unsympathetic to the get out of the homophobe who wants their media to stay straight as an arrow. The third episode of The last of uswhich many critics have praised for its storytelling and the post-apocalyptic weird romance at the center of the plot, has been reviewed on aggregated social sites like Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes.

For those unaware, review bombing is when people rate media exceptionally low or high in order to make a point. The people who reviewed the bombed Episode 3 were trying to drive home their own homophobia and hatred, exposing a bunch of fanatics. The internet is a cruel place; especially for anything indirectly related to video games, which has proven to be a breeding ground for bigotry.

But Ramsey doesn’t seem bothered by the extreme hatred, having been the target himself before. “I know people will think what they want to think,” they said in an interview with British GQ. “But they will have to get used to it. If you don’t want to watch the show because it has gay stories, because it has a trans character…” (this is a reference to Lev, the trans man at the center of a story in The Last of Us Part IIwhich is already being written for a television adaptation in season two of the series) “…it’s on you, and you’re missing something.”

The actor has had his share of hate on the internet. When they were first cast as Ellie, a tremendous amount of vitriol was spewed out about the decision. Now they see it as a challenge. Ramsey won’t let others tell them what to do. “It’s not going to scare me. I think it comes from a place of challenge.
