This week (February 13), Ruben Vincent released a new video for one of the standout tracks, ‘February 13,’ from his recently released debut album Jamla/Roc Nation love is war. With ‘Feb. 13th ‘Reuben and fellow Jamla/Roc Nation star Rapsody take a deep dive into the LoI East War theology and dissect the complexities of relationships/situations and love on “Black Love Day,” a day created to demonstrate love, forgiveness and acceptance among black people.
“Feb. 13th is a record full of pure emotion. Ironically, I found out it was celebrated as ‘Black Love Day’, but this song was made to address the ups and downs of relationships , and the resulting harms,” said Reuben Vincent. “It was on Valentine’s Day, so we wanted to make it the breakup song. Everyone on this record went through real emotions to get to this point.
“Making the song and video was a very organic experience. Myself and Reuben had been staying with Young Guru in Los Angeles during the pandemic; waking up talking, learning together, having conversations about life,” Rapsody offers, “We all put our experiences into the music, and we all poured into the idea of the visual in the same way. Guru had the initial concept, I was on Pinterest getting inspiration for it. ‘executing, Reuben was tossing around scene ideas. This is how creating in a village is supposed to look, this is how it all came together so well.
Vincent has spent the last few years honing his artistry under the tutelage of hip-hop legends 9th Wonder and Young Guru. He showed his talents on his debut album love is war (which you can consult here), a conceptual yet subtly constructed project where he unpacks romantic relationships and entanglements to warm, moving beats. With refined and varied streams, Reuben balances the time spent in love with the hours needed to pursue his art and his dreams.
